Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery (Eyelid Aesthetic)

What is blepharoplasty?

With the advancement of age, sagging of the skin naturally occurs due to the effect of gravity. Parallel to this process, findings such as bagging on the eyelids, loosening of the skin, discoloration, relaxation, and wrinkles occur. Factors such as exposure to sun rays, air pollution, irregular sleep, excessive smoking, and alcohol use accelerate the aging process of the skin. Eyelid surgery is the procedure of tightening the eye area, in which the upper and lower eyelids are intervened and the excess fat, skin, muscle, or eyebags are intervened. In this way, both an aesthetic and natural appearance is obtained, and the person can see comfortably.

Who is eyelid aesthetics for?

Healthy patients, generally 30-35 years old, who have sagging and bagging on the upper and lower eyelids, and who do not have any obstacles to surgery, are suitable for this surgery. Although it is an operation mostly preferred by individuals over the age of 30, if there are symptoms mentioned, this treatment can be applied at an early age, but the expectations of the patients with the process should be clear and achievable.

What should be considered before the operation?

Patients should set their priorities and clearly explain these to their surgeon. The surgeon needs to be informed about these expectations clearly. Inform your doctor fully about the medications he uses, the operations he has undergone, and his illnesses. If drugs such as aspirin that increase bleeding tendency are used during surgery, your doctor may discontinue them. For a quick and smooth healing process, you should stop smoking and alcohol consumption 2 weeks before. In addition to the signs of eyelid aging, if there is a drooping eyebrow, the need for eyebrow lifting may arise. Our doctors will inform you about this. In addition to all these, it is recommended not to consume herbal food supplements, herbal medicines, and herbal teas.

How the operation is performed & Type of anesthesia & How long will you stay in the hospital

The operation is performed under sterile hospital conditions under local or general anesthesia. It is usually performed under local anesthesia. Depending on the patient’s complaints, both the upper and lower eyelids can be intervened. The average surgery time is between 60-90 minutes. Patients are discharged on the same day.

During the operation, the following is done briefly:

  • After an incision is made along the natural skin fold for the upper eyelid, excess skin, fat and muscle are removed and the incision is closed. Usually, the incision is not noticed by others due to the natural fold of the eyelid.
  • In lower eyelid surgery, an incision is made just below the lower eyelashes or on the inside of the lower eyelid. With this incision, if the bags under the eyes are removed and the skin needs to be repositioned, the eyelid and tendons are supported, then the incision is closed.

Overview of the post-operative process

After eyelid surgery, ice and antibiotic ointment are applied to the application area. The patients are discharged after being kept under observation for two hours.

Eye care

After the surgery, pomade should be applied 2 times a day for 1 week. During this period, smoking should not be avoided due to the irritating effect of smoke, and sunglasses should be worn to protect from the sun and wind. Contact lenses should not be used and the eyes should not be itchy. It is not recommended to contact your eyes with water for the first 4-5 days.

Swelling & Bruise & Pain

The patients’ pain would be relieved with simple painkillers such as paracetamol. It is natural to have bruises and swellings, and they resolve spontaneously within an average of 2 weeks. To minimize them, you should keep your head upright. Intermittent cold compression application should be continued for the first 3 days. Height 2-3 pillows can be used while at rest.,

Return to Your Normal Life and Your New Image

For a quick and healthy recovery process, the patient can rest for a week. In this process, strenuous exercises and lifting weights are not recommended. If the patient uses contact lenses, they can wear them after 1 week and continue their life from where they left off.

The new image of the patient after the operation will become more evident as the swelling and bruises decrease. This period is two weeks as we mentioned above. However, in this process, patients should follow the recommendations described.

Will there be scars after eyelid surgery?

Since the incisions made as a result of eyelid aesthetic interventions are made in line with the eyelid folds, there is no scar. After 4-6 weeks, the incision becomes more red and tight. After completing the remodeling phase, the scars are no longer visible.

Is eyelid aesthetics permanent?

Due to the nature of life, aging will continue in your eyelid area, but your appearance after the procedure is permanent for an average of 8 to 10 years.
